The EastEnders star says he never expected childhood sweetheart Joanne Mas – the mother of his three children – to propose
The Albert Square favourite says he never expected childhood sweetheart Joanne Mas – the mother of his three children – to propose.
But Jo’s romantic gesture may have been inspired by his screen character, who got engaged to his childhood sweetheart Linda (Kellie Bright) at Christmas.
In a case of art imitating life, both couples have been together since they were teenagers and have three children.
Yesterday Danny, 37, admitted that he’d not dared to ask Jo to marry him because he wouldn’t have been able to cope if she’d turned him down.
“It was a complete bolt out of the blue but I’m so glad she did it because I don’t think I could have taken the rejection,” the actor said. “I love the fact Jo proposed.”
Jo, 37, explained: “I’ve always wanted to marry Danny and I decided that if I didn’t get things moving, it would never happen.
"I never wanted to get married when the children were babies because I wanted to let my hair down and enjoy the day. But we have had our little boy now and we’re not going to have any more, so the time is right.”
Despite being together for 20 years after first meeting at school aged just 14, Dyer has cheated on Jo several times.
The most recent occasion was in May last year, even though he had previously said he “hated himself” for earlier infidelities.
“When you have children, it isn’t just about me and Danny. I wouldn’t destroy the lives of my babies for something that doesn’t matter.”
Danny insisted that he will never stray again. He told Hello: “I thought the grass was greener – but the grass was horrible and I don’t ever want to go there again.”
The couple are now planning a major wedding which they believe will be one of the biggest showbiz events of 2016.
In January Jo told the Mirror that she didn’t think they’d ever tie the knot – because Danny didn’t believe in marriage. So having waited so long, and then done the proposing herself, she doesn’t want to do things by halves.
“The only thing that’s a massive deal for me is I want my dad to see me look like a beautiful princess. I want him to walk me up the aisle. I want Julio Iglesias performing, the whole lot.”
As well as their three kids Dani, 18, Sunny, six and 16-month-old Arty, several of Dyer’s co-stars from his film days and from his current role in EastEnders will be invited.
Joanne’s proposal came at the start of EastEnders’ “live week”, which celebrated the BBC soaps 30th anniversary.
In January Dyer picked up the gong for best male soap actor at the National Television Awards and paid tribute to Jo.
Speaking on the stage he said: “I wanna thank my old woman, that raving little sort over there, because if I don’t she’ll club me later. I love her to death.”
