Hazard needs more protection, insists Mourinho

The Chelsea manager is concerned about the rough treatment of his star man, and has argued that referees must do more to ensure the Belgian is adequately protected

Jose mourinho has called on referees to give greater protection to Eden Hazard after seeing his star man repeatedly fouled against PSG.

Chelsea  secured a 1-1 draw in Tuesday's last-16, first-leg Champions League tie, but the Portuguese manager was unhappy about the treatment of his No.10, who was fouled nine times, a record in Europe's top competition this season.

And Mourinho believes that the responsibility to look after Hazard lies firmly with match officials.

"If he's another player he dives, stays on the floor, rolls on the grass, screams", Mourinho said. "He's asking for cards and cards.

"This kid is pure. Today there were nine fouls. In the Premier League it's no different. For example at Stoke, which was an unbelievable situation, and this is what happened game after game."

When asked how Hazard should be protected, Mourinho responded: "Give cards to the opponents, follow the rules of the game. It's as simple as that."
